Early Years

I grew up in Stockbridge Village, then known as Cantril Farm, after my parents moved there from Everton and Liverpool. My upbringing shaped who I am and why I do this job.

Family

Job Security

My dad worked at the Ford Halewood plant, now Jaguar Land Rover Halewood. His secure, unionised job gave our family stability and the chance to buy our own home - something I never take for granted. That experience is why I believe so strongly in good jobs, strong trade unions, and opportunity for every family.

People

Trade Unions

Before becoming an MP, I spent my career fighting for working people in the trade union movement. I was Political Director of Unite the Union and worked with the Trades Union Congress, campaigning for better pay, rights and conditions.

Passion

Politics

I’ve also worked at the heart of politics - advising Ken Livingstone at City Hall, serving as Deputy Chief of Staff on Jeremy Corbyn’s 2015 leadership campaign, and later working as a senior adviser to Keir Starmer in opposition.

Interests

Music & Culture

Alongside my political work, music has always been a big part of my life, and I am proud to sit on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee. When I was 17, I ran away to Paris - an experience that broadened my horizons and gave me a sense of independence that has stayed with me ever since. After returning, I became part of Liverpool’s music and club scene. With a friend, I helped launch the now-iconic club night Liquidation, and later Le Bateau, both of which became well-known fixtures in the city’s cultural life. I also worked in the music industry, including doing press for Pulp and writing for music publications.
